Heritage Breeds

Importance of Preserving Heritage Breeds

Heritage breeds are traditional livestock breeds that were carefully selected and bred over time to develop traits that made them well-adapted to the local environment. These breeds thrive under farming practices and cultural conditions that are very different from those found in modern day industrial agriculture.

Heritage breeds retain essential attributes for survival and self sufficiency, such as fertility, foraging ability, longevity, maternal instincts, ability to mate naturally, and resistance to diseases and parasites.

Heritage breeds store a wealth of genetic diversity important for the future of our agricultural food system, yet many heritage breeds are in danger of extinction.

Free Range & Organic

What they eat matters

We are not certified organic, but our chickens only eat organic grain and vegetable compost and whatever they forage on their own. You can see the physical difference between a free range egg and a conventional cage raised egg. They are more nutritious and it doesn't only benefit our health when we eat them - they also produce more vibrant and healthy chicks when hatched.
